Great news - in any language!

The publicity toolkit will help you disseminate your activity and communicate your message both within the University to staff, students and alumni, and off-campus to key stakeholders, peers, policy makers, funders and potential students.

As a language expert, Dr Fiona Douglas of the School of English needs little help with the written word. But when her book, 'Scottish Newspapers, Language and Identity' was published in 2009, Dr Douglas sensed that an opportunity for her work to be heard more widely was being missed.

The book looked at the way Scottish newspapers use Scottish words and found a dramatic shift since devolution in 1998 as some titles seek to increase their readership by emphasising their 'Scottishness'. The results were surprising and raised important questions about national identity and culture which clearly had relevance both within and beyond the academic community.

Following a short interview with the University's media relations team, a press release was drafted, approved by Dr Douglas and released to the media. The story was picked up by the Times Higher Education and Dr Douglas also appeared on the radio discussing her findings.

Critically, the book's funder, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) picked up on the news, putting the press release up on their website.

The publicity toolkit can help you make the most of the media opportunities which arise from your work.

And it's not just about research. Staff can use the toolkit to raise the profile of themselves, their work, their research team and academic unit, publicise their events and celebrate their successes. By doing so, they will support the University's strategy.

If you are unsure which tools to use to publicise your activity please fill in this form and email it to pressoffice@leeds.ac.uk.

Representatives from media relations, communications and enterprise and innovation have a weekly publicity meeting where we consider your activities.

For more urgent stories we also have interim discussions. We will then advise you on your next steps and will do our best to ensure your information is disseminated in the way you want and reaches the people you want it to.

Alternatively if you know what you want to do, browse the site for information on tools ranging from press releases to DVDs; from photography to brochures.
